Geology of Fuerteventura Fuerteventura, the second largest and oldest island of the Canary archipelago, 20.6 million years old and of volcanic origin. Geologically Fuerteventura is still very young. The development began about 36 million years by the movement of the tectonic plates of Africa and the Atlantic, both swim on a hot magma. The movement of continental plates led to submarine eruptions and eruptive material accumulated, for the African plate moves 19 mm per year slower than that of the Atlantic. This difference results in stunting, which in turn lead to increase of undersea mountains whose peaks were finally as islands on the sea surface. In general, it is assumed that the formation of the East has taken to the West, as the oldest basalts - are (12 20 million years) to Fuerteventura and the age of these rocks continuously to the island of El Hierro (less than 2 Million years) younger. |
